Keeping Spring Activities Safe and Fun for Your Pets

Spring is such a fun time for pets—they can finally get some activity in the sunshine without having to trudge through cold snow and ice! But after that snow melts, there are some potential dangers to be aware of before you let the pups out for a run around the yard or neighbourhood park. Things like snow, mould and debris could pose a threat to your beloved animals, but there are things you can do to keep them safe through the transitioning seasons.

Protecting Your Pets So They Can Enjoy Spring Activities Safely

Watching our pets frolic in the spring sunshine is always an entertaining activity, but unexpected pet illness or injury can be upsetting and costly. Keep them safe by following these tips!

Watch for Snow Mould

People are quick to assume that dogs and cats have stronger immune systems than we do—after all, they eat raw meat and other things that would make us humans sick. However, animals have much more sensitive respiratory systems than we do, so we need to watch out for airborne pathogens or other things that could trigger illness.

There are two types of snow mould: the light pink kind and the greyish-white kind. They create bare circular patches in the grass right as the snow starts melting, and the fungus itself looks kind of like snow or frost with a subtle tint. Unfortunately, you can’t get rid of it instantly—you’ll need to wait for the snow to completely melt, rake up the affected patch of grass, and then reseed it. If you see snow mould in your yard, try your best to avoid letting your pet play nearby.

Know the Signs of Mould Illness in Pets

Outdoor activity for your pets usually means lots of running around and panting, so inhalation of mould spores can occur when conditions are damp. If your pet has inhaled mould, they may exhibit some of the following signs:

  • Breathing difficulties like coughing and wheezing
  • Runny nose or nosebleeds
  • Excessive licking, chewing or scratching themselves
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Allergy symptoms like sneezing and weepy eyes

Take your pet to the vet if they show any of these symptoms following a period of outdoor activity.

Pets Can Have Seasonal Allergies

It’s not just humans who can have seasonal allergies from pollen and other airborne allergens. Some pets have more sensitive allergies than others and may have heightened histamine levels, especially in spring. Itchy ears and excessive scratching are the main symptoms in dogs, but they may also exhibit signs like weepy, red eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose.

If you think your pet has seasonal allergies and their symptoms are causing discomfort, particularly after outdoor activity, bring them to the vet to discuss antihistamines or other treatment options.

Inspect the Terrain for Sharp Objects

Debris might be hiding underneath the snow, and when it melts, your pet could get poked. Sharp sticks, barbecue tools, rusty nails, or other random backyard junk could appear in your yard once the weather warms up. Give your yard a thorough inspection once the snow melts in case anything is hiding in there.

There is more potential for dangerous items to become exposed in public spaces after the snow melts, so pay close attention to your dog during outdoor activities. Protective footwear for pets can help prevent significant injury.
