What is Better than Fresh Bread?
Have you ever walked into a room when freshly baked bread has just been removed from the oven? The smell of fresh baked bread demands that you close your eyes and inhale all you can of that warm, inviting, and beautiful smell. Or how about after a long winter and you’re enjoying an almost summer afternoon walk and on the breeze you catch the smell of fresh mowed lawn? What is happening to us when our nose captures these intoxicating smells? Why do we feel so good when we smell such wonderful smells?
Science of Smell
Your ability to smell comes from the olfactory sensory neurons, a small part of tissue inside the nose. These cells connect directly to the brain.
Smell enters the nose and passes through the olfactory bulb to the amygdala and hippocampus. The amygdala is where all our emotions, emotional experiences, and memory, are processed, and links to other parts of the brain, especially memories. The hippocampus main role is in learning and memory. When activated together scientists believe the dynamic between the amygdala and the hippocampus may be what gives emotionally based memories their uniqueness.
Why Smell Feels So Good
Because smell goes directly to the amygdala and hippocampus, smells trigger an immediate emotional response. A response which can trigger good memories associated with that smell. For the fresh bread, this smell may trigger childhood memories stored away which are only remembered when you smell the bread. Of course, some smells can also trigger bad memories in the same way, and even trigger memory to remember something you have forgotten.
